I actually like the Ram Promaster cupholder that is mounted in the bottom of the lower instrument panel but not its location. The stock cupholders accomodate different sized drinks and hold them securely without rattling. I doubted that I could create a better cupholder than the ones I already have.

And I wondered about the wisdom of raising them higher. Although I had to bend down to reach my drink, the stock cupholders are low and out of the way. They do not interfere with the ability to enter the aisle and swivels the seats.

There are significant design challenges for a console type cupholder solution. Mounting cupholders higher will interfere with the ability to swivel the seats and enter the aisel. I kept that issue front and center in my thoughts because I own a camper van and didn’t want to forfeit that ability.

I designed the cupholder relocation kit to rapidly relocate the stock cupholders located in the lower instrument panel to a higher more convenient, position. It takes around a minute to perform the process of relocating the cupholder you already have and less than a minute to reverse it to stock condition. It requires no tools or drilling. My design goals for this included

  • Raising the cup holder to a higher, more convenient position

  • Tool less install

  • No-drill required

  • Preserve the ability to enter the aisle and rotate the seats

  • Easily and rapidly reversible to stock (less than a minute)

  • Cupholder supported from below

  • OEM look

Staying true to these design goals was challenging, but it ultimately led to a practical, innovative solution tailored to van life, where space is limited and versatility is key. Although space is limited when the cupholder is raised, it is still possible to enter the aisle and swivel my seats. I can also restore the cupholder to its original factory location whenever I want. I can have it raised on long travel days and take it down at my destination. I dont need to take it down however. You can learn more about the accessory below.

Note: The wireless phone charging pad is not able to be used when the cupholder is relocated. You will need to find an alternate way to secure and charge your phone. (I designed an accessory mounting bar to do this). I have a detailed video below that describes this limitation and others in great detail below. Design, implementation, and use of early prototype

In this video, I describe how I designed and implemented a Cupholder Relocation Kit to relocate the cupholders from its location in the bottom of the lower instrument panel to a higher, more convenient position on the wireless phone mounting location. Users of the kit will forfeit the use of the wireless phone charging capability but will gain a small storage area and more convenient access to the cup holder. Right handed drivers and left-handed passenger will especially appreciate the new location. The video describes how to measure to see if the kit will work in your van as well as how to install and use the kit. This video was created before the final design was complete. The final design available on my Etsy shop uses a 3D printed brace instead of the white plastic cardboard. The final design does not require tools to install either. It uses T-Nuts or Knobs to secure the cupholder assembly.
