“Designing Innovative Accessories You’ll Love Having and Look Forward to Using”
If you had to choose just one place to install cupholders, the factory location is a strong option. It offers reasonable accessibility while staying out of the way when entering the aisle or swiveling the seats. Although I do have to bend down to reach my drink, the low position keeps the cupholders unobtrusive and prevents interference with movement inside the van.
Mounting cupholders higher up makes them easier to reach, but it also reduces available space for moving through the aisle, rotating the seats, and getting in and out. It can also interfere with setups like a cab air mattress across the front seats. That tradeoff was important to me as a camper van owner, since I didn’t want to sacrifice usability or flexibility.
To address this, I designed a cupholder relocation kit that allows you to quickly move the stock cupholders from the lower instrument panel to a higher, more convenient position. The process takes about a minute, requires no tools or drilling, and can be reversed just as quickly to restore the original setup. That means you can raise them for everyday driving, then lower them in seconds whenever you want to open up the space—whether for easier movement or to deploy a cab air mattress.
An added benefit of relocating the cupholders is that it frees up the original mounting space, creating a small storage area in the lower instrument panel. By lining that cavity with a simple rope basket, it becomes a useful and accessible spot for storing small everyday items.
My design goals were:
Raise the cupholders to a more convenient height
Enable a completely tool-free installation
Avoid any drilling or permanent modification
Preserve access to the aisle and seat rotation
Make the setup easily and quickly reversible (under one minute)
Provide solid support from below
Maintain an OEM-style appearance
Balancing all of these goals was challenging, but it led to a practical and flexible solution designed for van life, where space is limited and adaptability matters.
When the cupholders are in the raised position, space is tighter, but it’s still possible to access the aisle and swivel the seats. And whenever needed, I can quickly return them to their original factory position. I can keep them raised during long drives and drop them back down at camp—or anytime I want to maximize space.

Note: The wireless phone charging pad is not able to be used when the cupholder is relocated. You will need to find an alternate way to secure and charge your phone. (I designed an accessory mounting bar to do this). I have a detailed video below that describes this limitation and others in great detail below. Be sure to watch all the videos below before purchasing the kit to ensure that it is right for you and you understand its benefits and limitations.
